Restructuring and new construction to house the head office of Nestlé France on a former industrial site.

The Noisiel site, east of Paris, is one of the finest examples of the triumphant industrial architecture of the last century. Covering approximately 14 hectares along the River Marne, it is made up of different buildings each of which formerly had a specific function in the chocolate production process. The exceptional quality of the buildings, created by the best architects of the period, was the main argument in favour of transforming the complex into the head office of Nestlé France, a subsidiary of the agri-food multinational.

The quality and durability of the superb materials used in the 19th century demonstrate that the cost of the works was quite low compared to a standard corporate head office. The project comprises examples of all possible types of works, from new construction to historic preservation. The rigorousness of the 4-metre structural matrix, the theme of the pavilion and the homogeneity of the materials and their use create unity, whilst at the same time each building is individualised by its function and use.

The luxury of the head office derives from myth and history, but also from the low occupancy ratios (the ratio between total and useful area), which are well in excess of the standard for corporate properties.
